Il Violino Nero・Maxence Fermine’s book redesign

The assignment

The assignment required to develop a brand new layout for an existing book. I worked on this project with two other students, analyzing and revamping the entire look of “Il Violino Nero” (the Black Violin) by the French author Fermine. The story combines a master violinist (Johannes) with a superior violin maker (Erasmus) living in different parts of the world, but whom final fates are intertwined in a tale of coincidence.

The realisation

We conceived the novel as a tryptique composition: two small booklets, each narrating the story of a character, and a bigger one (Johannes & Erasmus) that integrates the merging destiny of the two personages. Every piece uses a different paper grain and typeface to further underline the peculiar mood of each episode.

As shown in the image, the booklets are arranged adjacently to each other, over the final book. Each booklet features self-standing illustrations, which gain a new, comprehensive meaning if the two booklets are joined together.

The entire composition comes in a folded cover, which depicts a music staff fading into a butterfly’s flight – a recurring motif of the book.
